Bangkok's traffic is legendary, but the city has excellent public transport options if you know how to use them.

BTS Skytrain

The elevated train system covering Sukhumvit and Silom areas.

Hours: 6:00 AM - 12:00 AM Fare: ฿16-59 depending on distance Payment: Single journey tokens or Rabbit Card (stored value)

Key Stations

  • Siam: Central interchange, shopping malls
  • Asok: Interchange with MRT, Terminal 21
  • Saphan Taksin: Boat pier for river ferries
  • Mo Chit: Chatuchak Market, bus terminal

MRT (Metro)

Underground system connecting to BTS at several stations.

Hours: 6:00 AM - 12:00 AM Fare: ฿16-42 Payment: Single journey tokens or MRT card

Key Stations

  • Sukhumvit: Interchange with BTS Asok
  • Silom: Interchange with BTS Sala Daeng
  • Hua Lamphong: Main train station
  • Chatuchak Park: Weekend market

Chao Phraya Express Boat

River boats connecting many attractions along the river.

Hours: 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM (varies by line) Fare: ฿15-40 per trip Tourist Boat: ฿60 single, ฿180 day pass

Key Piers

  • Sathorn (Taksin): BTS connection
  • Tha Tien: Wat Pho, Grand Palace
  • Tha Phra Arthit: Khao San Road area

Taxis

Metered taxis are cheap and plentiful, but traffic can be brutal.

Starting Fare: ฿35 (first km) Per km: ฿5-6 Tips:

  • Always insist on the meter
  • Avoid taxis near tourist attractions (often refuse meter)
  • Use Grab for guaranteed metered rides
  • Carry small bills - drivers often claim no change

Grab (Ride-Hailing)

The go-to app for taxis, bikes, and car services.

Services: GrabCar, GrabTaxi, GrabBike Benefits: Fixed pricing, GPS tracking, no language barrier Payment: Cash or card

Tuk-Tuks

Iconic but overpriced. Fun for the experience, not practical.

Typical Fare: ฿100-200 for short trips Negotiate before getting in Tip: Agree on destination and price clearly

Motorbike Taxis

Orange-vested riders at most corners.

Best for: Short distances, beating traffic Fare: ฿10-50 for short hops Caution: Wear the helmet, traffic is chaotic
