Getting Around Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is easier to navigate than Bangkok but still requires some transport know-how.

Within the Old City

The ancient walled city is small enough to walk. Size: 1.5km x 1.5km square Best for: Walking, bicycle Tips: Many temples and cafes within walking distance

Songthaews (Red Trucks)

The iconic red pickup trucks are Chiang Mai's main public transport.

How they work:

  1. Flag one down on the street
  2. Tell driver your destination
  3. Driver nods if it's on their route
  4. Pay when you get off

Fare: ฿20-40 within city Fixed Routes: Vaguely exist but flexible Tips:

  • Great for getting to Night Bazaar, Nimman, etc.
  • Share with other passengers
  • After 9 PM, prices increase

Grab

Well-established in Chiang Mai.

Services: GrabCar, GrabBike Coverage: Good throughout the city Prices: Reasonable, fixed pricing Tips: Best option for late nights

Motorbike/Scooter Rental

Essential for exploring mountains and beyond.

Daily Rental: ฿150-300 Requirements: International license (technically) Where to Rent: Old City and Nimman have many shops Tips:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Mountain roads are winding
  • Check brakes before renting
  • Get comprehensive insurance

Bicycle Rental

Perfect for Old City exploration.

Daily Rental: ฿50-100 City Bikes: Mobike app available Tips:

  • Flat terrain in Old City
  • Avoid main roads during rush hour
  • Many cafes and temples have parking

Tuk-Tuks

Different from Bangkok's - more like small trucks.

Fare: ฿60-150 depending on distance Tips: Negotiate before getting in Best for: Short trips, tourist experience

Day Trip Transport

To Doi Suthep

  • Songthaew from Old City: ฿40-60 one way
  • Private taxi/Grab: ฿300-500

To Doi Inthanon

  • Private car/tour recommended
  • No public transport

To Pai

  • Minivan: ฿150, 3 hours
  • Bus: ฿80, 4 hours
  • Motorbike: 3-4 hours (762 curves!)

Airport to City

Options:

  • Grab: ฿100-150
  • Airport Taxi: ฿150 fixed
  • Hotel transfer: Varies
