Phuket has dozens of beaches, each with its own character. Here's your guide to the best ones.

West Coast Beaches (Best Sunsets)

Patong Beach

Phuket's most famous and busiest beach. Length: 3km Vibe: Active, touristy, lots of water sports Facilities: Everything - restaurants, bars, hotels Best for: First-timers, nightlife lovers Cons: Crowded, can be pushy vendors

Karon Beach

Long, beautiful beach south of Patong. Length: 3km Vibe: More relaxed than Patong Facilities: Good selection of restaurants and hotels Best for: Beach lovers, families Swimming: Good, beware of currents in monsoon

Kata Beach

Picturesque bay with good surfing. Length: 1.5km Vibe: Family-friendly, surfing culture Facilities: Cafes, shops, surf rentals Best for: Families, surfers, couples Note: Kata Noi nearby is smaller but beautiful

Kamala Beach

Quieter, upscale beach north of Patong. Length: 2km Vibe: Relaxed, family-oriented Facilities: Beach clubs, resorts Best for: Families, couples seeking peace

Surin Beach

Beautiful beach, upscale restaurants. Length: 1km Vibe: Trendy, beach clubs Facilities: High-end beach clubs, restaurants Best for: Beach club scene, photography Note: No beach chairs (local regulation)

Bang Tao Beach

Long beach with luxury resorts. Length: 6km Vibe: Upscale, spacious Facilities: Resort facilities, Catch Beach Club Best for: Luxury seekers, families

South Coast Beaches

Nai Harn Beach

Beautiful local beach in the south. Length: 1km Vibe: More local, laid-back Facilities: Restaurants, limited vendors Best for: Authentic experience, swimming

Rawai Beach

Not a swimming beach but great for seafood. Best for: Seafood restaurants, boat trips Note: Water too shallow for swimming

Hidden Gems

Freedom Beach

Secluded, only accessible by boat or jungle trek. Access: Longtail boat from Patong (฿1,500 return) Best for: Escape the crowds, snorkeling

Paradise Beach

Small cove south of Patong. Access: Road from Patong, shuttle available Admission: ฿200-300 Best for: Day beach club vibe

Beach Safety

  • Red flags: No swimming - dangerous currents
  • Yellow flags: Caution - swim with care
  • Green flags: Safe to swim
  • Lifeguards: Present at main beaches in high season
  • Monsoon season: Strong undertows, be very careful
