Welcome to Bangkok! Thailand's capital is a city of contrasts - ancient temples alongside modern skyscrapers, peaceful canals next to bustling streets. Here's everything you need to know for your first visit.

Before You Arrive

Best Time to Visit

  • Cool Season (Nov-Feb): Best weather, busiest tourist season
  • Hot Season (Mar-May): Very hot and humid, Songkran festival in April
  • Rainy Season (Jun-Oct): Afternoon showers, fewer tourists, lower prices

What to Pack

  • Light, breathable clothing (cotton recommended)
  • Modest attire for temples (covered shoulders and knees)
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Rain jacket or compact umbrella
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

Getting to Bangkok

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

The main international airport, 30km east of city center.

  • Airport Rail Link: 45 min to city center, ฿45
  • Taxi: 350-500 baht + tolls, 30-60 minutes depending on traffic
  • Private Transfer: Pre-book for hassle-free arrival

Don Mueang Airport (DMK)

Budget airline hub, 24km north of city center.

  • Bus: A1/A2 to BTS Mo Chit, ฿30
  • Taxi: 200-350 baht, 30-45 minutes

Where to Stay

Sukhumvit

Modern area with BTS access, nightlife, shopping, and dining. Best for first-timers.

Silom/Sathorn

Business district with good transport links, near Lumphini Park and river.

Khao San Road

Budget traveler hub, backpacker vibe, lively nightlife.

Riverside

Luxury hotels, traditional Bangkok atmosphere, easy boat access to temples.

Must-Know Tips

  1. Traffic is intense - Use BTS/MRT whenever possible
  2. Respect temples - Remove shoes, dress modestly
  3. Bargain at markets - But not at 7-Eleven or malls
  4. Stay hydrated - Carry water, it's hot and humid
  5. Download Grab - Easiest way to get taxis
  6. Keep small bills - Many vendors don't carry change

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Taking taxis that won't use the meter
  • Visiting major temples at midday (too hot, too crowded)
  • Expecting Western-style queuing
  • Forgetting sunscreen
  • Over-scheduling (Bangkok is exhausting!)
